Travel bans and other restrictions were imposed by countries throughout the world on Monday in an attempt to keep the new omicron variety at bay, despite the fact that it is unknown what this implies for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Japan has stated that all international tourists will be denied admission, while additional instances of the variation found just days ago by experts in South Africa have been reported in Hong Kong, Australia, and Portugal. Authorities in Portugal were looking into whether any of the illnesses were the first examples of local transmission of the variation outside of southern Africa.

In an increasingly globalized world of travel and open borders, keeping the genie in the bottle has become nearly impossible.

While the global response to COVID-19 was first criticized for being delayed and chaotic, the response to the new variation was swift.

“This time the world showed it is learning,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, singling out South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for praise. “South Africa’s analytic work and transparency and sharing its results was indispensable in allowing a swift global response. It no doubt saved many lives,” she said.

The WHO has also complimented South Africa and Botswana for rapidly alerting the globe to the new variety’s appearance — and many have warned that they should not be penalized for their quickness, especially because it’s unclear when or where the new variant initially appeared.

But it didn’t stop von der Leyen from lobbying the European Union’s 27 member states to impose an emergency embargo on flights from seven southern African countries, similar to what many other countries have done.

With the new COVID model, Japan and Israel are not taking any risks. omicron

Before Portuguese officials discovered 13 instances of omicron among team members of the Belenenses professional soccer club, cases had previously been recorded in Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands. One of the members recently traveled to South Africa, according to authorities. Its match against Benfica over the weekend was called off at halftime due to a shortage of players.

“Quarantine is not obligatory, but we assume people will act responsibly,” spokeswoman Petra Faber said.

Japan, which has yet to find any omicron cases, has re-imposed border procedures that were loosened earlier this month for short-term business travelers, international students, and employees, taking no risks.

“We are taking the step as an emergency precaution to prevent a worst-case scenario in Japan,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said of the measure that begins Tuesday. Japan has kept its border closed to foreign tourists from all nations.

Israel decided to bar entry to foreigners, and Morocco said it would suspend all incoming flights for two weeks starting Monday.

Despite the global worry, scientists cautioned that it’s still unclear whether omicron is more alarming than other versions of a virus that has killed more than 5 million people. And in some parts of the world, authorities were moving in the opposite direction.
