Imran Hussain, Labour MP for Bradford East, told BBC Radio Leeds that the border law was “fundamentally flawed and means the government will turn their backs on some of the most vulnerable”.

Mr Hussain added: “The bill risks breaching international law and undermines global efforts to support people fleeing war and persecution.”

The government’s new law will make it illegal to enter the UK without authorisation, in the aim of deterring migrants from crossing the English Channel by boat.

Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, has stated that the bill will establish a “strong but fair” asylum system that will allow the UK to “take complete control of its borders.”

The Home Office has disputed that the bill violates international law, claiming that it conforms with the United Kingdom’s international responsibilities, notably the Refugee Convention.

Roqia fled Afghanistan two years ago after being forced into an arranged marriage by her husband’s family, who subjected her to torture and violence.

She landed in Yorkshire two months ago after sailing over the English Channel. She told BBC Radio Leeds that she had no choice but to travel.

She claimed she “closed her eyes” and “felt so helpless” on the boat, speaking via a translator.
