On Monday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention upgraded three countries to its highest-risk travel category, including vacation destination Italy.

The CDC included vast, freezing Greenland and the small, tropical East African island country of Mauritius to its “Level 4: Covid-19 Very High” category in its weekly update of Covid-19 travel advisories.

When more than 500 cases per 100,000 population have been recorded in the previous 28 days, the CDC assigns a destination to Level 4.

Omicron and the European Surge

Italy’s promotion to Level 4 comes as Europe continues to battle a new wave of Covid-19 cases.

According to a government press release issued Tuesday, the Italian government authorized extending the country’s state of emergency until March 31.

The state of emergency provides Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s administration the authority to enact restrictions aimed at reducing the coronavirus, like restricting particular activities to persons who have been completely vaccinated.

Unvaccinated tourists entering Italy, including those from the European Union, will be subject to a five-day quarantine. Those who have been immunized must additionally submit a negative test result. These new regulations will be in effect from December 16 until January 31.
