Long quarantine periods are threatening the running of health systems and other industries since illnesses are on the rise.
People who have been infected with Covid-19 and are asymptomatic can leave isolation after five days and wear masks around other people for another five days, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
However, Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, indicated on Sunday that the need for a negative test after five days of isolation could be changed this week.
“There has been some concern about why we don’t ask people at that five-day period to get tested. That is something that is now under consideration,” Dr. Fauci said on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. “I think we’re going to be hearing more about that in the next day or so from the CDC.”
“There’s a big picture of trying to do it in a way that is scientifically sound, but that also gets people back to work,” Dr. Fauci said later on CNN. “There’s no doubt that you do want to get people out into the workplace if they are without symptoms, and in the second half of a 10-day period…the likelihood of transmissibility is considerably lower in that second half of the 10-day period, and for that reason, the CDC made the judgment that it would be relatively low risk to get people out,” he said.
In Europe, France’s health minister announced on Monday that the country’s isolation requirements for vaccinated persons and children who test positive for Covid-19 will be eased as of Monday. The country has seen record rates of daily infections in the last week, with roughly 158,000 people testing positive on average each day during the week ending Saturday.
