Early research “suggests a higher risk of reinfection” with the novel COVID-19 form, according to the WHO.

Overnight, new travel restrictions to the United States went into effect, prohibiting visitors from eight southern African nations. The decision was made in response to concerns that the novel omicron COVID variant found in South Africa might be more transmissible and vaccine-resistant than the delta variation.

Because of omicron concerns, the United States has joined a growing list of countries that have imposed travel restrictions. Japan joined Israel and Morocco in banning all international visitors on Monday. Australia postponed reopening its borders by two weeks on Monday, citing the need to gather more information about the omicron type.

According to the White House, Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s senior medical adviser, indicated over the weekend that more definite information on the transmissibility and severity of omicron will be available in two weeks.

“As a precautionary measure until we have more information, I am ordering additional air travel restrictions from South Africa and seven other countries,” Biden said in a statement on Friday. “As we move forward, we will continue to be guided by what the science and my medical team advises.”

Biden signed a proclamation on Friday barring travelers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi. It’s unclear how long the travel restrictions will be in place. His proclamation took effect at 9:01 p.m. PT Sunday/12:01 a.m. ET Monday.
