The Home Secretary claims that the new policy places immigration control in the hands of the British government for the first time in decades, while Labour dismisses it as “meaningless.”

Priti Patel believes that employees should be required to learn English before coming to the UK.

The home secretary indicated that immigrants will ‘clearly’ need to speak English and have a ‘sponsored path’ through work or an academic institution in order to acquire a visa ahead of an announcement on the government’s new points-based immigration system.

“We’re being very clear about this – this is a system that puts the British government in control of its immigration policy for the first time in decades.

And, yes, it is right that people should speak English before they come to our country, that they should have a sponsored route, whether it’s through employment or a sponsored route through an academic institution.“

Patel referenced the EU Settlement Scheme, which has had 3.2 million applications, for individuals who currently live in the UK but do not match the requirements of the government’s new point-based system.
