According to a senior Qatari official, employers in Qatar would be forced to provide health insurance coverage for expatriates and their families under a new law released by the emir this week.
Qatari citizens make up only 10% of the population due to the large number of foreign workers in the modest but prosperous Gulf natural gas exporter.
Currently, international residents and visitors can get free basic public health care by purchasing a government health card for a little price, and employers are not required to provide supplemental private health insurance.
The law will take effect six months after it is published in the official gazette, according to state news agency QNA. The move was made without explanation.
