Yahoo Japan is doubling down on remote work, telling its 8,000 workers that they can work from anywhere in the East Asian country and that the company will cover their travel expenses if they need to come in.
Since 2014, employees at the corporation have been able to work remotely, but when the COVID-19 pandemic spread in 2020, the program quickly grew.
Around 90% of Yahoo employees in Japan now work from home on a regular basis.
Yahoo Japan, which is owned by Softbank, is a key participant in the country’s IT sector.
Softbank owns a Yahoo-branded web portal, which is one of Japan’s most popular websites. It offers a variety of services, including an online auctioneer and mobile network.
Yahoo Japan previously required remote workers to live within commuting distance of the company’s headquarters.
Yahoo Japan said that employees who prefer to live outside of Tokyo would now be eligible to claim travel expenses for domestic flights, long-distance buses, and express trains up to a maximum monthly allowance of 150,000 (€1,141).
