Taiwan has been named the world’s greatest place for expats for the third year in a row in an annual survey of more than 12,000 people living and working overseas. What are the other countries at the top of the ranking?

 

The InterNations 2021 Expat Insider survey, which includes an examination of how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected international mobility for the first time, was produced by InterNations, a global expat network with more than four million members.

There a poll of expats’ happiness with the quality of life, ease of settling in, working life, personal finance, and cost of living, Taiwan came out on top, followed by Mexico, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Portugal, and New Zealand.

Kuwait is ranked 59th out of 180 countries, with Italy, South Africa, Russia, Egypt, and Japan faring only slightly better.

What impact has the Covid-19 pandemic had on expats?

Regardless of local judgments, the clear message from this year’s Expat Insider is the pandemic’s severe impact on life abroad, with 45 percent of respondents indicating Covid-19 has impacted their lifestyle or relocation intentions.

The most significant repercussions have been felt in people’s workplaces or businesses, travel plans, and social lives.

 

“The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of billions of people all over the globe, and expats are no exception here,” reported InterNations. “Among all survey respondents, close to one in ten say they have moved or will move home earlier than originally intended due to Covid-19 — though 46% of them also plan to return to their life abroad within the year.”

 

According to the report, one in every six respondents had to cancel or postpone plans to relocate overseas or relocate from one foreign country to another. However, because to the pandemic, just 5% of existing expats said they intended to return to their home countries sooner than expected.
