For the year 2022, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has stated that 20,000 additional H2B work visas will be made available to Haitians and other Central Americans. As the number of migrants coming at the US southern border with Mexico continues to rise, more visas will be issued for seasonal, non-agricultural guest workers.
According to a US official, the additional 20,000 visas for guest workers will be in addition to the typical annual allocation of 66,000 visas for the fiscal year. A total of 6,500 employees from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Haiti will be included in the expanded number.
Employers use the H2B visa program to hire workers such as landscapers, housekeepers, hospitality staff, construction workers, and carnival workers, among others, despite a chronic labor shortage in the United States aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Routes to the law
The Biden administration has attempted to push through numerous legal paths for migrants to join the US as part of a $1.7 trillion social spending program. However, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough recently vetoed Biden’s US immigration reforms for the third time.
As unprecedented numbers of migrants are apprehended at the country’s southern border with Mexico, President Biden is under increasing pressure to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the US.
Even if all of the new H2B visas are filled, the number of migrants attempting to enter the US will be a small fraction of the total. According to US Border Patrol statistics, 700,000 migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Haiti were apprehended in the fiscal year 2021 alone.
Fewer visas are available
Despite the addition of 20,000 H2B visas for 2022, this is still less than the 22,000 made available in the second part of the fiscal year 2021.
The Biden administration set aside 6,000 H2B visas for three Central American countries in the second half of the fiscal year 2021, which concluded on September 30, despite protests from US immigration advocacy groups. Not all of the visas, however, were given out.
