The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a surge in technology adoption in nearly all business sectors, and in every part of the world.

Companies had to rely on automated processes and adopt digital solutions almost overnight to ensure continuity, as workplaces were forced to close with little to no warning at all.

What’s the hold-up?

The global mobility (GM) function had been sluggish to embrace automation before the pandemic. Despite the benefits of automation, the cost and time associated raised concerns about disruption, causing businesses to delay digitalization.

However, having been forced down this path sooner than planned, businesses are discovering that the technology they were obliged to adopt in a rush has increased productivity in unexpected ways. Mindsets are shifting to be more receptive to the advantages that rapid technological adoption can provide.

How can automation help?

The main advantage of automating GM processes is that it frees up time for other value-added activities. At a time when corporations are unlikely to have the funds to hire more employees, maximizing time and productivity while lowering expenses is a top goal.

As for July 2021, more than 20% of firms have claimed that they are implementing more technology for assignee communication and support, and 42% have increased or are considering expanding automation.

As evidenced by the results of an industry-related recent study, the pandemic has increased automation in these sectors and the embrace of technology in general (Global Mobility & Covid-19). Plus, it has clearly highlighted the necessity for businesses to implement systems that allow them to track where their employees are and how close they are to completing their assignments, in order to make informed repatriation decisions.

The impact of Covid-19 on the future

Moreover, the economic ramifications are unavoidably leading to increased scrutiny of the expense of overseas assignments, which means GM teams are turning to automation to demonstrate a thorough awareness of the numbers involved in any transfer.

Aside from the pandemic, more open and flexible attitudes on the possibilities of technology to enhance GM suggest that automation will certainly grow in areas that many companies have yet to investigate.

Despite the fact that resources are likely to be tighter than ever, businesses have never been more open to the advantages that technology can provide, not merely for keeping operations running but also for making them stronger.
